DESCRIPTION
A failing GE 5T does not always mean buying a new probe. Use the fault table below to match what you are seeing on screen to a likely cause, then check what a repair assessment would need.
| Manufacturer | GE |
|---|---|
| Model | 5T |
| Probe type | TEE array |
| Compatible systems | GE Vivid 5, Vingmed System Five |
You will usually see the 5T running on GE Vivid 5, Vingmed System Five. Mention the console model with the fault description – connector and revision differences matter.
On TEE heads such as the 5T, articulation cables, tube integrity and bite damage dominate the fault picture; electrical leak testing is non-negotiable after any suspected breach.
Common failure modes for the 5T
Match what you are seeing against the table below. The right-hand column reflects how faults of this kind typically assess – the actual verdict always depends on the individual probe.
| What you see | Likely cause | Typically repairable? |
|---|---|---|
| Cable jacket cracked, wrinkled or discolored | Surface jacket wear – the conductors inside are often still good | Usually repairable |
| Pin damage or corrosion visible in the connector | Mechanical damage from forcing or dropping the connector | Usually repairable |
| Bubbles or lifting at the lens face | The lens separating from the acoustic stack underneath | Usually repairable |
| Connector lock broken or hardware missing | Mechanical damage to the connector shell | Usually repairable |
| Strain relief separated, split or stiff | Flex fatigue where the cable meets the probe or connector | Usually repairable |
| Fuzzy or noisy image that cleaning does not fix | A worn lens surface or elements beginning to degrade | Case by case |
| Noticeably weaker penetration than the paired probe | Reduced acoustic output from element ageing or a delaminating lens | Case by case |
| Bite marks or punctures on the insertion tube | Patient bite damage to the flexible shaft | Case by case |
| Tip articulation stiff, loose or unresponsive | Worn or broken articulation cables | Case by case |
| Failed leak test on a TEE probe | Breach in the insertion tube or tip sealing | Case by case |
Check these before you ship the probe
- Compare penetration and uniformity against a known-good probe on the same preset.
- Inspect the lens face under good light for cuts, bubbles, lifting edges or discoloration.
- Photograph the complete manufacturer label – the exact revision matters for parts compatibility.
- Flex the cable gently along its length while imaging – intermittent dropout points to broken conductors.
- Run the system’s built-in probe test or element check if your console provides one.
- Do not continue clinical use after suspected bite damage; note the articulation behaviour (stiff, loose, unresponsive) for the assessment.
Repair, exchange or replace — which applies to your 5T
For the 5T, think in terms of damage depth: surface and cable-level faults are usually repairable at a fraction of replacement cost; acoustic stack failures are evaluated case by case; extensive element loss generally means replacement. Send the symptoms and photos first – that determines the path before anything ships.
What we need to quote your 5T repair
- A clear photo of the complete manufacturer and model label on the probe
- A description of the fault: what you see on screen and when it started
- The ultrasound system (console) the probe is used with
- Screenshots or photos of the image problem, if the fault is visual
- Photos of any physical damage – lens, housing, cable or connector
Product imagery on this page is representative of the 5T probe family and is not a photograph of your specific unit. This page does not claim OEM authorization or universal compatibility. Repair feasibility, turnaround and commercial terms are confirmed in writing after assessment of the actual probe.
