A Real Ultrasound Probe Repair Report

This is a real ultrasound probe repair report — one of ours, issued to a customer in September 2025, published here with their name and the pricing removed and nothing else changed. Ask most vendors what their report contains and you get a description rather than a document, so here is the document.

We are publishing it because the useful thing about a repair report is not that it exists — it is whether it says anything falsifiable. Judge ours on that, and hold other vendors to the same test.

What makes this report worth anything

Four things, and they are the same four we would tell you to look for on anyone else’s report.

It gives a number. “64 elements out of 128” is a claim that can be checked. “Significant image degradation” is not. Element counts are the honest currency of this trade because a second engineer with the same probe can count them again and get the same answer.

It names the part, not the process. “Replace new scan head” tells you which subassembly changed. A repair that swapped the scan head and a repair that re-terminated four conductors are different products with different lifespans, and a report that calls both of them “repaired” is hiding the difference.

It says whose material went in. “Use our own shell, with new crystals” is a specific, checkable statement about provenance. This is the question buyers most often forget to ask and most often regret not asking — refurbished parts of unknown origin inside an OEM-looking housing are the failure mode behind most bad second-hand probe stories.

It shows the probe. Before and after, including the damage. Photographs are not proof on their own, but their absence is a reasonable reason to ask why.

What this particular repair tells you about repairability

Half the array dead and a cracked housing sounds terminal. It was not. That combination is exactly what a scan head replacement addresses, and it is worth knowing because a probe in this state is often written off by its owner without a quote ever being requested.

This is also why we ask for your on-screen images before you ship anything. The visible damage on this probe would have led plenty of departments to bin it. How we judge repair against replacement covers where the line actually falls.

Getting a report for your own repair

We issue a written report on request — tell us when you send the probe. There is no charge for it. For biomedical departments that need the fault evidence in a service record, ask and we will include the before-and-after element counts and, for TEE and endocavity probes, the leak test and electrical safety results.

How to use a report you have been given

A report is only useful if you do something with it, and there are three things worth doing.

Put it in the asset record. A probe with a documented service history is worth more than an identical probe without one, both when you resell it and when the next fault appears. The next engineer to open it should not have to guess what is inside.

Use it to date the next failure. If the report says the scan head was replaced but the cable was not, you now know which subassembly is the oldest thing in that probe. That is your next failure, and it is worth knowing before it happens rather than after.

Compare it against the quote. If a vendor quoted for a scan head replacement and the report describes a re-termination, those are different jobs at different prices. A report is the only place that discrepancy becomes visible.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to ask for the report, or is it automatic?

Ask for it when you send the probe and we will prepare it. There is no charge. We do not issue one by default because a fair number of customers do not want the paperwork, but it is never a problem to produce.

Can the report include the leak test and electrical safety results?

For TEE and endocavity probes those results are included as standard, because your department may need them in a service record. For other probe types, ask and we will add them.

What warranty comes with a repair?

Six to twelve months, depending on the probe and what the repair involved. The exact term is confirmed with your quote before any work starts. If the fault we repaired returns within that period, we repair it again at no charge. The report matters here: because it records exactly which subassembly was replaced, a recurrence is traceable rather than a matter of opinion.
